Project Summary

This project is ongoing and does not have results.

PCORI is commissioning a scoping review of the evidence on interventions for mental health and challenging behaviors among persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

Understanding mental health symptoms and treatment strategies is important for individuals with IDD and their families. However, limited descriptions of study populations, providers, treatments, and outcomes in the research literature pose barriers to advancing science and practice in this area. Studies of mental health interventions among individuals with IDD are heterogeneous and have yet to be comprehensively described. The few recent scoping reviews on this topic were limited by population or intervention characteristics. A new scoping review would expand on these prior studies by describing the comprehensive landscape of pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic interventions for mental health and challenging behaviors across all ages of people with IDD.

The goals of the scoping review are to:

  1. Develop an evidence map of studies that displays research by study design, population characteristics, and intervention type
  2. Describe characteristics of study design, population, and intervention; intervention types; delivery; setting; context; interventionist; and outcomes for randomized controlled trials
